The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Bangladesh will appoint Mashrafe Bin Mortaza as the UNDP National Goodwill Ambassador for Youth in Bangladesh. Mortaza is the current One Day International and Twenty-20 National Cricket Team Captain for Bangladesh. UNDP Bangladesh will conduct an official signing ceremony and make a formal announcement in a press conference on February 25. The news has been rife for the last one month and an official announcement is expected to come very soon. Mashrafe yesterday disclosed the matter, saying he will meet the UN official on February 25 after which it will be materialized.
The ODI and T20 skipper of Bangladesh informed he had received this proposal a month ago and that a number of meetings regarding the issue had been conducted. Other than sport, on February 15, 2012, the movie star Riaz was elected as a goodwill ambassador by the United Nations for popularising the game of hockey in Bangladesh. Bangladesh ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan also worked as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador along with magician Jewel Aich and film actress Arfia Zaman Moushumi for the United Nations partner organizations in 2006. Bangladesh female table tennis player Jobera Rahman Linu, cricketer Habibul Bashar Sumon and Mohammad Ashraful earlier worked with UNICEF as goodwill ambassador in 2006 Mashrafe bin Mortaza will be the first Bangladeshi player to work with the United Nations directly.
Bangladesh had enjoyed unprecedented success throughout the 2015 under the leadership of Mashrafe. His inspirational captaincy made a team, capable of occasional successes, to be forced to reckon with in the International cricket circuit. The UN has enlisted the volunteer services and support of prominent personalities from the worlds of art, music, film, sport and literature to highlight key issues and to draw attention to its activities.
