SC orders departmental probe against judge over alleged graft

The Supreme Court has directed the law ministry to hold a departmental inquiry against the District Judge of Cox's Bazar, Md Sadiqul Islam Talukder, on charges of corruption and misconduct. The apex court also asked the ministry to attach Judge Talukder to the law ministry as early as possible. The four-member General Administration (GA) committee, led by the Chief Justice, Surendra Kumar Sinha, came up with the directives after allegations of misconduct and corruption against Judge Talukder were proved after preliminary investigation. The other members of the GA committee are Justice Dastagir Hossain, Justice Zinnat Ara and Justice Obaidul Hasan. The committee, in its directive, also asked the law ministry to take the next course of action against Judge Talukder after appointing as District Judge Dr Md Golam Murtoza, who is currently a member of the Administrative Appellate Tribunal in Dhaka, as investigation officer in the matter. Judge Talukder allegedly enjoyed the hospitality at the house of Tofail Ahmed, chairman of Bandarban’s Naikhangchhari upazila and the prime accused in the mindless attack on the Buddhist community at Ramu, in Cox’s Bazar, in 2012. The court officials and clerks have filed an  application before the Supreme Court for taking action against the judge as he was involved in various corruption cases, including taking bribe while conducting judicial function and misbehavior with officials and litigants.  As per the allegations, Judge Talukder granted bail to many accused in sensitive cases, including murders, rape, acid attack and Yaba related cases after taking money.  On receiving the allegations, the apex court appointed the Chittagong District Judge, Nurul Huda, to investigate the charges.  After preliminary investigation, the Chittagong District Judge found proof and sent a report to the apex court as per the directive of the GA committee.  According to sources, the law ministry will now hold a departmental inquiry against him and appoint Judge Murtoza as investigation officer. After the inquiry, the ministry will take the next course of action, sources added.
