Swechchhasebak League man  killed
BARISAL: A local Awami Swechchhasebak League (ASL) leader was murdered allegedly by his cousin over a land related dispute at Mehendiganj upazila of the district yesterday, reports BSS. The victim was Idris Mazi, 35, assistant secretary of Charakakria union unit of ASL and son of Sikander Mazi of Laskerpur village under same upazila. Local sources said Idris Mazi was hacked to death with sharp weapon allegedly by his cousin Iqbal Howlader over a land related dispute after entering victim's room of the house early yesterday morning. Iqbal Howlader fled the scene after the incident. He was rushed to Mehendiganj Upazila Health Complex where on duty doctor declared him dead. Police sent the body to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.

94 held in Ctg special drives

CHITTAGONG: Police in overnight special drives arrested 94 people, including five activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, from different upazilas of Chittagong district on Thursday night. The law enforcers also recovered four cocktails and 1,900 pieces of Yaba tablets during the drives. Confirming the matter, Mohammad Naimul Hasan, Additional Superintendent of Police (Special Branch) of Chittagong district said the police also held an activist of Jamaate Islami and four activists of Shibir during special drive and the others were accused in different cases. They are accused in cases of sabotage, Naimul Hasan added. He said that of the detainees, eight persons were accused in regular cases while 81 others were wanted in different cases.
Seminar on earthquake
The School of Environmental Science and Management of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organised a Seminar on ‘earthquake risk and preparedness in Bangladesh’ on IUB campus at Bashundhara in the capital on Thursday, says a press release. Syed Humayun Akhter, chairman, Department of Geology, Dhaka University, was the keynote speaker of the seminar. The speaker spoke on the recent earthquake in Nepal, the risk factors for Bangladesh and preparedness to meet the challenges of an earthquake.
