The investigation into the murder of progressive writer Avijit Roy is being delayed because of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation(FBI), said Deputy Inspector General of Police Monirul Islam yesterday. While addressing at a press conference at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Media Center in the capital, the police official said, “Though the FBI took eleven pieces of evidence to their country, they are yet to send us the forensic reports.”
Even in one year, we did not get the reports which are delaying our investigation into the sensational murder case, the DIG claimed. “During our formal and informal communication, FBI officials informed us that they found some profiles in the DNA sampling in their own lab and they will hand over all DNA reports together,” he added.
Replying to a question, he said, “Those who were arrested in connection with the killing did not give any confessional statement. That is why we are yet to confirm their involvement in the murder.”
There are at least seven absconding militants whom we are looking for, and after their arrest, we will know whether they are followers of the banned Islamist outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) chief Mufti Jashim Uddin Mada, said DIG Monirul. On Feb 26 last year, two unidentified men approached progressive writer Avijit Roy, a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin, and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonna as they were leaving the Ekushey book fair on the DU campus.
