BNP seeks CJ help for release of jailed editor

The BNP has sought Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha’s intervention for the release of Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman from jail, party joint secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told reporters in the BNP central office at Naya Paltan yesterday. The BNP’s request came hours after Rahman was shown arrested in a fresh case when he was scheduled to walk out of jail yesterday. He was shown arrested in a case pertaining to the Explosive Act that was filed at Shahbagh Police Station in January 2013. Police have sought a 10-day remand for Rahman in the case. The Dhaka CMM court will hear the remand petition on February 22. Rizvi alleged that though the editor got bail in all cases against him, he was still being detained illegally on the pretext of a production warrant in a defamation suit. The production warrant was withdrawn yesterday and he was scheduled to walk out of jail, but was shown arrested in another case, Rizvi added. The BNP leader claimed that Mahmudur was tortured in jail and that he was not keeping well. “Mahmudur has lost almost 14 kg. If this continues, his health may deteriorate further,” he added.
