DSE ends week in red

Share price indices at the country’s premier bourse, Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), plunged in the last week losing 76.29 points with an average turnover of Tk 534.93 crore, reports UNB.
The DSE benchmark index, DSEX, closed the week at 4515.14 points, 76.29 points or 1.66 per cent low than the previous week. DSEX closed the previous week at 4591.43 points, gaining 46.72 points or 1.03 per cent.
The DSEX Shariah Index, DSES, lost 18.37 points or 1.64 per cent to close at 1099.22 points in the week.
The daily average turnover at the DSE was Tk 534.93 crore, a down by 29.03 per cent or Tk 218.83 crore less than the previous week while last week’s average turnover was Tk 753.76 crore.
A leading stockbroker of the country, LankaBangla Securities, analysing last week’s market pulse, said, “After a capital market-friendly national budget proposal of FY’16, market failed to react positively as investors kept themselves in the sideline to observe the direction.”
The stockbroker also said, “Average daily turnover was 29 per cent lower compared to previous week. This low level of turnover indicates meager participation by investors. This week, benchmark index lost 76.29 points with trailing market P/E standing at 15.58.”
“Among the major economic news this week, inflation slowed down to 6.19 per cent in May, which is close to the government’s annualised target for the fiscal year, due to a decline in food prices,” LankaBangla said on its weekly market analysis.
Of the 321 issues traded at the DSE on last week, 113 gained, 196 suffered loss and 12 remained unchanged.
All the major sectors were gainers on the last week. The major gaining sectors were Pharmaceuticals gaining 3.02 per cent, Mutual Fund 2.24 per cent, Tannery 1.98 per cent, and Telecommunication 1.12 per cent.
The losing sectors at the DSE were Engineering losing 6.0 per cent, NBFI 3.01 per cent, Cement 2.65 per cent, and Bank 1.57 per cent.
Top 10 losers at the DSE on the last week were Purabi General Insurance losing 22.10 per cent, followed by Summit Purbanchol Power Company 16.67 per cent, Summit Power 16.39 per cent, AFC Agro Biotech 16.26 per cent, and Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company 15.75 per cent, BDCOM Online 15.74 per cent, Khulna Power Company 13.24 per cent, per cent, Summit Alliance Port 13.24 per cent, Far Chemical Industries 12.45 per cent, and Bangladesh Steel Re-Rolling Mills 12.32 per cent.
United Airways dominated the week’s top turnover chart with shares worth Tk 157.69 crore, followed by Khulna Power Company Tk 155.15 crore, BEXIMCO Tk 139.96 crore, Summit Power Tk 119.50 crore and Grameenphone with shares worth Tk 84.61 crore.
The week’s top five gainers were ICB Employees Provident Mutual Fund One with a rise of 31.82 percent, followed by United Airways 29.21 percent, Al-Haj Textile 19.56 percent, Reckitt Benckiser 12.97 percent, and Berger Paints 11.89 percent.
