Despite being demised of a dream run to play in the final, Bangladesh Under-19 Cricket team is expecting to place them amongst the top five out of the Test playing nations as they will face-off their Asian rival Sri Lanka in the third-place deciding match at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium (KSOAS) in Fatullah today. The match will begin at 9:00am. Their high hopes to play in the final were shattered by spirited West Indies, who pulled off a three-wicket win with eight balls to spare in the exciting semifinal match of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2016 Bangladesh on Thursday.
The highest number of home crowds, which is record at this level of game, gathered to witness the match of Bangladesh and West Indies.
Bangladesh give more importance on this play-off match, which is apparently understood from the words’ of skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Following the end of the semifinal match, Miraz said that if they could triumph at least the play-off match it would then be a great accomplishment after champion or runners-up.
“Ahead of us, there have a third-place match, which is also very important for us. Although we could not be champion or runners-up it will be a great achievement for us if we could win at least this match,” said Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Losing to New Zealand, Bangladesh had missed to go into the second round of the World Cup at home event in 2004. But they in the next edition in Sri Lanka in 2006 had produced their best result by Shakib-Tamim-Mushfiq led team.
Before Thursday’s match against West Indies, that was the best result of Bangladesh, who they had become fifth.
“Now we want to place in the top five amongst the Test-playing nations in this multinational competition. Mushfiq bhai’s team was fifth, which was the previous best. We could not play in the final. But our next generation can better the result after us,” the 19-year-old Miraz told media.
Either Bangladesh or Sri Lanka has not come to Mirpur to warm themselves up for the third-place decider.
