50th show of ‘Kohe Birangana’ today
Manipuri Theatre will stage the 50th show of its much-acclaimed production ‘Kohe Birangana’- an adaptation of Michael Madhusudan Dutt’s Birangana Kabya, written and directed by Subhasis Sinha , today at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segun Bagicha in the city.
The play speaks of Shakuntala, Draupadi, Dusshala and Jona. It is about a group of people in a voyage who face a tempest. The travelers include a widowed mother and her son who were returning after attending a ritualistic festival and a priest. The priest felt that the reason for the tempest was his failure towards God. In order to make amends, the priest threw the child overboard in the unforgiving waters. Then after realising this deadly mistake, he threw himself in an effort to save the child, but it was too late.
Out of 11 verses from the original text, four has been articulated. Each part focuses on various subjects, such as the sheer courage of the woman, her love and passion, her anger and her devastation after losing what she loves the most in the world.
All the four characters will be played by Jyoti Sinha ,while the other important casts includes Smriti Sinha, Shukla Sinha, Sunanda Sinha and Bhagyalokkhi Sinha, among others. Ali Ahmed Mukul and Shajol Kanti Singha designed the set while the stage lighting had been designed by Mohammad Jasimuddin and Shahjahan.
