Pineapple farming gaining popularity in Narsingdi
NARSINGDI: Farming of Honey Queen Pineapple is gaining popularity at Palash upazila this season.
Successful yield of Honey Queen Pineapple brings substantial amount of money to the farmers, reports BSS.
A number of farmers mainly in three villages—Raban, Borabo and Jiardee – in Polash upazila involved themselves in farming Honey Queen variety of pineapple in their radish high lands and homestead garden from the long time and achieved economic self-reliant.
Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension, Narsingdi, Lata Fat Hossain said with the necessary help and logistic support from DAE huge quantity of pineapple are being produced in Polash upazila.
He said though this variety of pineapple is small in size that of common varieties, but it is very tasty with excellent flavour. Some 700 to 800 saplings can be planted on per biga of land which is producing on an average 1,000 to 1, 200 pineapples every year.
He said farmers of the upazila have brought about 10, 000 acres of land under pineapple farming this year.
Rabindranath, a fortunate farmer of Raban village, changed his lot by cultivating Honey Queen variety of pineapple in his radish high land.
He said this year he planted 4,000 saplings of pineapple on his five bigha of land which cost only Tk. 10, 000.
He expressed satisfaction over the production this year.
Harvesting began from the first week of Bangle month of Jaistha, he said.
He is hopeful to earn about Tk 1, 50, 000 by selling pineapple this year.
At present a single piece of pineapple of Tk 35 to 40 at local market.
