Mayor arrested before taking oath in Bogra

Md. Tofazzal Hossain Bhutto, the newly reelected mayor of Santahar municipality in Bogra, was arrested by police when he came to Bogra Deputy Commissioner’s Office yesterday for taking oath. In-charge of Detective Branch (DB) police of Bogra Md. Amirul Islam said they have arrested Tofazzal Hossain Bhutto on charges of several cases, including two related to murder. Assistant superintend of police (ASP) of Bogra circle-B Md. Gaziur Rahman said that Bhutto  was sent to jail soon after arrest.
Earlier on January 15, Bhutto did not turn up for a ceremony at Bogra Titu auditorium, where Rajshahi divisional commissioner of Rajshai Md. Helal Uddin Ahmmed took oath of newly elected mayors and councillors of nine municipalities.  On January 8, Bhutto, general secretary of Santahar Powra unit BNP, was implicated in a case following murder of Juba League leader Shafiqul Islam and transport worker Sohag Hossain in a clash between two groups of transport worker associations, one led by the local unit of Awami League and  the other by Jatiya Party.  At least 10 people were injured, over dozen shops vandalised and "looted", four auto rickshaws set on fire and a number of vehicles damaged during the clash.
