A Bangladesh Bank official was allegedly beaten and harassed by a police team led by Sub Inspector Masud Sikder of Mohammadpur Police Station in Geneva Camp area on Saturday night. Victim Golam Rabby, an assistant director of Bangladesh Bank, filed a written complaint against the police officer to the Deputy Police Commissioner (Tejgaon Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) yesterday. Inspector Jamal Uddin Mir, officer in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station, acknowledged that Rabby, also a former journalist, submitted a complaint to the police on Sunday. In the complaint, Rabby alleged that after withdrawing money from a bank ATM both, he was returning to his residence on Saturday night through Mohammadpur Geneva Camp. A police patrol team led by SI Masud forcibly picked him up on the police van from the camp gate. They also physically tortured him, threatened to kill and file false cases against him, the bank official said in his complaint. After getting information, Rabby’s friends requested police to release him. Several hours after the detention, Rabby was released near Asadgate area in Mohammadpur. When the accused police officer was contacted by The Independent over telephone, SI Masud, however, denied the allegations and said, “We wanted to search his body, but he obstructed. So we picked him up in our police van for interrogation.” “After a while, we released him as we did not find anything against the person,” the police official claimed.
