Nearly 848 students of Oshakpur government primary school in Sonaimuri upazila have been attending classes under the open sky for two years.
The upazila education department declared the school building abandoned for its dilapidated condition in 2013.
Acting headmaster Hosnaera Begum told The Independent that the school was constructed in 1994-1995 financial year. In 2006, plaster of the roof started falling and rain water dripping down. The building was repaired in 2009.
But the school building was soon getting worn out due to use of low quality construction materials.
Local sources said when the matter was communicated to the upazila primary education authorities they visited the school and after inspection declared the school abandoned in 2013. The students have since been attending their classes on the school ground, under the open sky. The authorities were forced to suspend the classes during July-August period last year when flood water entered the school ground.
Sonaimuri upazila primary education officer  Gazi Anower Hossain said temporary measures will be taken to set up tin-shed structure so that children do not suffer from summer heat and cold weather.
She said the school authorities has sought fund from the government for construction of school buildings.
