72 held with yaba, liquor in Ctg

Chittagong district police in separate overnight drives arrested 72 people, including a Jamaat activist, from different upazilas of the district Friday night. Abdul Awal, additional superintendent of police (Special Branch) of Chittagong district, said police detained the 72 persons for their alleged involvement in sabotage acts and vandalism. Police also recovered 130 pieces of contraband yaba tablets and 53 liters of country-made liquors during the drives. The detainees also include 63 arrest warrantees and eight accused in regular cases, he said.

Two youths held with arms

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two youths and seized a shooter gun and two rounds of cartridges from their possession in city’s Baizid area on Thursday night.
The arrested were identified as Hasan, 30 and Illias, 25.
On a tip-off, a team of the RAB-7 conducted a raid in the area and arrested them with the fire arms and bullets, said Squadron Leader Shafayet Jamil of RAB-7, Chittagong.
The arrested were wanted in several cases, he added.

Peninsula celebrated New Year

The Peninsula Chittagong celebrated New Year 2016 with spectacular fire-works. The whole event was organizsd on Hawaiian theme at Club21 rooftop garden of the hotel. The guests were greeted by saying “Aloha” by their Hawaiian dressed associates and they were leveled up with a Hawaiian Cap, Garland, Wrist Belt and nostalgic Flower crown. After reception there were a ‘Beach Photo’ booth surrounded by sand along with small hut, coconuts, seashells, umbrella and a lot. Mahbubur Rahman, Chairman of the Hotel, along with General Manager Mushtak Luhar, All associates and guests received 2016 with magnificent fireworks of 3 minutes and with the song “It’s a Final Countdown” sang by Warfaze.
 
JU Cine Society starts journey

With a view to removing injustice and anomalies from society by short films and dramas, a cultural organisation named ‘Jahangirnagar Cine Society’ started its journey on Friday on the university campus here.
The announcement of formal launching of the society came at a press conference at the office of Jahangirnagar University (JU) Journalists Association on the
afternoon.
Announcing the launching of the group, chief adviser of the organisation and associate professor of zoology department of the varsity Dr Kabirul Bashar said, “’We already made three short films and one of those has already adjudged as the short film by Asia Foundation.
