The year 2015 has been a sensational year for various reasons, not the least of which being killings of police personnel carried out by alleged militants. According to statistics obtained from the police headquarters, four policemen were killed in targeted attacks in different parts of the country, including the capital. On January 17, miscreants hurled petrol bombs on a police bus near NGO Bureau in the capital, seriously injuring four police constables including constable Shamim Hossain from Palashbari upazila in Gaibanda district. After 19 days of struggling between life and death, Shamim succumbed to his burn injuries at Square Hospital in the city. In October, miscreants stabbed Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) Md Sujaul Islam of Pakshi Police Camp under Esshordhi upazila in Pabna district. He belonged to Sheikh Para village of Bogra district.
On October 22, miscreants stabbed ASI Ibrahim Mollah from Bagerhat district near Gabtoli Bus Terminal. Initially, government high-ups claimed that BNP-Jamaat men killed him but after interrogating six suspected killers, DB police claimed that JMB men had killed the ASI.
On November 4, miscreants attacked a police team on Dhaka Tangail Highway in the city’s suburb, Ashulia, leaving one policeman dead and another seriously injured. The deceased was identified as Mukul Hossain, 23, while the injured was identified as Constable Nur-e-Alam.
In the course of the attack, three armed policemen escaped, abandoning their injured colleagues. ISIS claimed responsibility for the killing however the claim could not be verified. Following the cross fire at Shahadat, the police killed a JMB man whom they suspected to be behind the attack on the police team. On November 10, miscreants stabbed military police at the entry gate of Dhaka Cantonment. The victim was identified as Lance Corporal Samidul Islam, 27. Law enforcers arrested the alleged attacker.
Speaking of the attacks on police personnel, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said police personnel was killed to halt the ongoing trial of death-row convicts and destabilise the law and order situation in the country.
