LALMONIRHAT: A girder of under construction Second Teesta Bridge over Teesta River was collapsed allegedly using low quality materials in constriction in Mahipur area under Kaliganj upazila of the district on Thursday afternoon, reports BSS. An engineer of construction firm, Saiful Islam, was injured critically. He was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Sources said the girder was loaded with 157 tonnes materials and fell from the gantry crane while establishing bridge’s pillar.
Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) official sources said, the 850 meters long and 24 feet wide Second Teesta Bridge is being constructed on the River Teesta between Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat district and Gangachawra Upazila under Rangpur district at Mahipur Ghat point involving Taka 1.21 crore.
Construction firms Navana Group and WMCG joint venture was given work order to construct the bridge.
Refuting the allegation of low quality materials used in the construction, engineer Sadhan Kumar Saha, project manager of the bridge, said, the girder was collapsed as it slipped from the crane.
