Professors, green activist call on DU VC
Dr Michel Waldschmidt, Professor Emeritus of Pierre Marie Curie University, France and Dr Ding Liu, Professor of Xidian University, China, called on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique at the latter's office yesterday. During the meeting, they discussed various issues, including strengthening academic relationships of DU with Pierre Marie Curie University and Xidian University. They stressed the need for taking united efforts of academicians, scientists and other professionals to resist IS terrorism and religious fundamentalism all over the world. Professor Sajeda Banu of DU Mathematics Department and Professor Anwar Hossain were also present.
Meanwhile, Matthias Gelber, a world-renowned green activist called on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique at his office of the university on Saturday.
Director of the Institute of Energy of the university Professor Saiful Huque, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of US Software Limited Lutfor Rahman, Managing Director of Pacific Solar and Renewable Energy Limited Ibrahim Lodi, Senior Advisor of Catalyzing Clean Energy in Bangladesh Engineer SM Mahmud Hassan and Director of BD Technology Limited Engineer Humayun Kabir were present on the occasion. During the meeting they discussed development of education and research on renewable energy at the university as well as solar energy sector in Bangladesh.
They stressed the need for creating awareness among the people in this regard. Matthias Gelber expressed his keen interest to work together with DU authorities for promoting solar energy sector in Bangladesh.
Football tournament begins at SUST today
A football tournament titled ‘Maha-Sports SUST Champions League 2015’ will begin on the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) campus today. ‘Sports SUST’, a sports based organisation in the campus, organising the events for the fifth time. Sharif Ahmed, co-ordinator of the events, informed this to the journalist at a press conference which was held at SUST press club yesterday.
A total of 16 teams will participate in this event, including teachers-officers team. Dr Aminu Haque Bhuyan, vice chancellor of the university, will inaugurate the competition around 2pm at the handball ground of the campus on Monday.
Muhammad Al Rafi, president of ‘Sports SUST; Ex-GS Shakib Ahmed; SUST press club president Jabed Iqbal were present at the press conference, among others. ‘Sports SUST’ has organized the events since 2010 where a total 12 team participated and teachers-officers team was champion. Now it is a Mega events on the campus.
Urban Lab opens at Bangladesh University
The first urban research lab has been set up at Bangladesh University (BU) on Friday afternoon, says a press release. It is established to detect the disaster of environment at private level of the country. Chairman, Board of Trustees of BU and Senior Architect of Microsoft Quazi Jamil Azher formally opened this Urban Lab on 3rd campus of BU on Friday afternoon.
Head, Architect Department of BU, Bikash Saud Ansari; President Bangladesh Urban Institute and Adviser of BU, Dr Golam Rahman; Member Board of Trustees, BU, Urban Planner and environmentalist Architect Iqbal Habib; Member BoT, BU Engr. Masihur Rahman; Vice Chancellor in-charge Kamrul Hasan; former president of Institute of Architect, Architect Mobasser Hossain; Chairman, Mohammadi Group Rubana Haque spoke on the occasion among others.
Architect Mobassher Hossain said the experts working on environment can take data very easily from this lab for their research works. Rubana Haque, Chairman Mohammadi Group expressed his hope that BU Urban Research Lab would help establish Green Dhaka. In the second session of the programme, the distinguished guests take part in plantation at BU’s 3rd campus. Later, an attractive cultural programme was staged by the students of BU.
Concert for helping cold-hit people
The Business Club of ASA University Bangladesh (ASAUB) organised a concert for collecting warm cloth for cold hit people, says a press release. The title of this concert was ‘Concert for Kambal’. Dalem Ch Barman, vice-chancellor of ASAUB, was the chief guest of the programme. Some local musical bands participated in the concert. Students and the teachers enjoyed the programme and they also purchased a good number of blankets and donated those to the organiser for distributing the same among the cold-affected people. Dean and chairmen from different faculties and departments, Md Khalequzzaman, Registrar, Md Ashraful Haq Chowdhury, Additional Registrar of ASA University Bangladesh, teachers and students from different departments and official of ASAUB were also present in the programme.
