Authorities of Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST) declared winter vacation and asked the students to leave dormitories on Sunday, a move is seen to stop any escalation violence. On December 10, the students clashed with nearby villagers over an incident of teasing a female student. At least 20 people were wounded in the clash. Inmates of two students’ dormitories – Shaheed Mashiur Rahman Hall and Sheikh Hasina Hall, have already left the halls after being asked by the authority on Sunday, Professor Abdus Sattar, vice-chancellor of the university, said.
Earlier, the students staged demonstrations on the campus and boycotted classes and examinations in protest against the incident. Talking to newsmen the VC said the winter vacation of the university has been rescheduled. The vacation is due to start on December 20. It has now been advanced to December 14, he said. However, the admission tests of the university will take place on schedule. Additional police forces have been deployed on the campus to avoid any untoward incidents, the VC added.
