Two days after lifting its ban on Facebook, the government yesterday blocked micro-blogging site Twitter, online telephone and video service Skype, and communication app imo. Bangladesh Telecommuni-cation Regulatory Authority (BTRC) sent letters to mobile phone operators, International Internet Gateway (IIG) and International Terrestrial Cable operators in the country around 9pm last night directing them to halt the services immediately citing ‘security reasons’. The BTRC directive also said that the ban order will remain effective until further notice. The government lifted the ban on popular social networking platform Facebook on Thursday, 22 days after it had blocked the site temporarily. Earlier, on November 18, the BTRC suspended the operation of Facebook, Messenger, communications applications WhatsApp and Viber for security reasons.
