Confce on materials, electronics begins at RU
RAJSHAHI: A two-day long International Conference on Materials, Electronics and Information Engineering (ICMEIE) began at Rajshahi University (RU) on Friday with the aim of networking and collaboration among the people working in this field. RU Vice-chancellor Professor Muhammad Mizanuddin inaugurated the programme as the chief guest at the senate building of the university which brought together researchers, engineers and educationists from different countries.
RU Pro-VC Professor Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan and Professor Rafiqul Alam Beg, VC of Rajshahi University Engineering and Technology (RUET) addressed as special guests while RU Engineering Faculty Dean Prof Abu Bakar Md Ismail presided.
The speakers said the networking, collaboration and sharing knowledge among the world-class researchers, engineers and educationists engaged in the fields of materials, electronics, chemical and information engineering will help play an important role in developing the world.
Different important issues, including Functional Materials, Energy Engineering, Signal and Image Processing, Communication and Networking, Computer and Control and Biomedical Engineering, will be discussed in the two-day conference.
Dr Takayoshi Nakai from Shizuoka University of Japan, Dr Sisil Kumarawadu from University of Moratuwa of Sri Lanka, Dr Norihiko Kamata from Saitama University of Japan, Dr Tomokazu Iyoda and Dr Keiji Nagai from Tokyo Institute of Technology of Japan, Dr Mohammad Abul Fazal Mohammad Ismail from University of Malaya of Malaysia, Surendra Kumar Gautam from Tribhuvan University of Nepal and Keikichi Hirose from Tokyo University of Japan presented their respective papers.
BRAC University gets new ESS chairperson
Mahabub Hossain, immediate past executive director of BRAC, has joined BRAC University as a distinguished professor and chairperson of the Department of Economics and Social Sciences (ESS) on Monday, says a press release.
Prior to joining BRAC, he was the head of the Social Sciences Division at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines, and coordinator of the Consortium for Unfavorable Rice Environments (CURE) in Asia. Dr Hossain began his career in 1970 as a staff economist at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS, former PIDE) and rose through the ranks to become its Director General during 1988-91.
He was awarded the first Gold Medal by the Bangladesh Agricultural Economist Association in 1984. Dr Hossain did his Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Economics, from University of Calcutta, India, in 1966. He did his Masters of Arts in Economics, from University of Dhaka in 1969. He obtained PhD in Economics from University of Cambridge, UK in 1977.
Orientation programme held at UIU
United International University (UIU) organised a two-day orientation programme for the students of Summer-2015 at the UIU Auditorium in the capital on Wednesday & Thursday, says a press release.
Newly admitted students in the School of Business & Economics and School of Science and Engineering participated in the orientation programme. UIU Vice Chancellor M Rezwan Khan presided over the ceremonies while  Pro-Vice Chancellor Chowdhury Mofizur Rahman spoke on the programmes.
The speakers said at the orientation programme that providing quality education is the prime concern of this university. The speakers also advised the students to be more attentive to their academic studies to face the challenges of 21st Century.
