New German classroom inaugurated at DU
German Ambassador Dr Thomas Prinz and Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University AAMS Arefin Siddiqui inaugurated the newly refurbished German classroom at the Institute of Modern Languages on DU campus on Sunday. The German classroom has been renovated to cater to the growing interest of students who want to learn German language before taking up higher studies in Germany. Every year, hundreds of students from numerous faculties are applying to attend German classes at the Institute. This year, the number stood more than 600. At the moment, around 1,300 Bangladeshi students are studying at different universities in Germany. Siemens Bangladesh Limited (SBL) extended their support to renovate the entire classroom with all modern language learning facilities along with a glimpse of German culture and heritage in order to enhance the learning experience and effectiveness of teaching. Siemens, the renowned German company that focuses on the areas of electrification, automation and digitalization, is one of the world’s largest producers of energy-efficient technologies. As a part of its commitment to the society and to ensure sustainable development, Siemens regularly supports such initiatives.

AIUB holds annual job fair
American International University – Bangladesh (AIUB) organised the annual ‘AIUB Job Fair 2015’ at AIUB FBE Building, Banani in the capital on Saturday, says a press release. Vice Chancellor of AIUB Carmen Z Lamagna inaugurated the fair. Nearly 90 renowned National and multinational companies including banks, IT solutions, mobile operators, networking solution providers, pharmaceuticals, leasing & finance companies, call centers, automobile companies, real-estate companies, job portals, agro-based companies, accessories and equipment companies participated in the fair. AIUB Job Fair is organized every year to create a platform for the AIUB Alumni and future graduates to facilitate their smooth entry into the corporate world. This flagship event has been hosted by the office of placement and alumni under the leadership and guidance of founder and chairman Ishtiaque Abedin, founder and vice president (HRD), Treasurer Dr Hasanul A Hasan, and Nadia Anwar Founder & Vice President (Student Affairs). Pro-Vice Chancellor Charles C Villanueva, Vice President (Academics) Tafazzal Hossain, registrar, directors, were also present.

Award giving ceremony held at NSU
The Marketing Club (TMC) of North South University (NSU) successfully hosted the award giving ceremony of Hashtag Marketing, the first ever digital marketing competition of the university on its Bashundhara campus in the capital recently, says a press release. MA Kashem, chairman, Board of Trustees, Gour Gobinda Goswami, vice-chancellor (in charge), M Mahboob Rahman, dean, School of Business and Economics, M Emdadul Haq, director, Student Affairs, Zarjina Tarana Khalil, chair in charge, Department of Marketing and International Business, addressed the programme, among others. The aim of Hashtag Marketing, a workshop on digital marketing followed by a competition, was to provide participants with a real life experience on developing and promoting a brand’s online presence and appeal. Hashtag itself is an ever increasing online trend made popular by social media networks like twitter and facebook which helps in categorizing popular topics through the usage of hashtags.

Archaeological seminar held at JU

SAVAR: A seminar on ‘Development of the Tourism Industry through Protecting the Archaeological Site of Bangladesh and the Culture of the Special Cultural Society’ was held at Jahir Raihan auditorium on the university campus on Sunday. Archaeology Department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) organised the seminar. Vice-Chancellor Farzana Islam inaugurated the seminar as the chief guest with Professor of the department Dr Mustafizur Rahman in the chair. Former chief whip Vice-Principal Abdus Shaheed, MP, and Pro-VC Abul Hossain addressed the function as special guests.

US delegation meets DU  VC

A two-member delegation, led by Tim Schellberg, president of Gordon Thomas Honeywell Governmental Affairs of USA, called on Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique at his office on Sunday. Other team member was Leonard J (Len) Goren, a DU press release said. Chairman of the Department of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology of DU Sharif Akteruzzaman was present, among others, on the occasion. During the meeting they discussed the development of DNA Laboratory at Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology Department of DU as well as genome sequence research at the university. Prof Arefin sought cooperation from the GTH-GA authorities for strengthening bio-science research at Dhaka University. The US delegation assured the VC of providing all possible support and cooperation in this regard. The possibilities of undertaking joint collaborative research programmes on genome sequence by the University of Dhaka and Gordon Thomas Honeywell Governmental Affairs (GTH-GA), USA were also discussed at the meeting.
