Iron bridge turns risky; people suffer

Thousands of people, including students of four educational institutes, have been suffering for a long time due to a damaged iron bridge over Amkholapara canal in Kalapara upazila. Most of the spans, plates and iron angels of the bridge have been damaged. Although locals repaired the bridge several times with wood planks it did not sustain. Students and people are passing through the bridge taking risks of their lives every day. Mojammel Haque, teacher of Musulliabad AK Secondary High School, said students of the school feel unsafe while passing through the Amkholapara Bridge. Zakir Hossain, a lecturer of Kuakata Khanabad College, said one thirds of student of the college use this damaged bridge to reach the college. Enayet Uddin, a local, said this iron bridge has turned useless for a long time. Students of Azimpur Govt Primary School and Thonjupara Govt Primary School are forced to use this bridge to reach their schools. But steps are yet to be taken. Local people demand repair of the iron bridge soon for the sake of the students. Abdul Mannan, Kalapara LGED engineer, said the government has taken initiative to build up RCC guarder bridge there instead of repairing the iron bridge. At least eight guarder bridges have already been completed in different places of the upazila.
