14th excavation work at Wari-Bateshwar ends
The 14th phase of excavation work at the Wari-Bateshwar Archaeological Site at Tongirtek in Shibpur upazila concluded on Friday. Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Rashed Khan Menon attended the concluding ceremony as chief guest. Sirajul Islam Molla, MP, Sirin Akther, director general of the Department of Archaeology, Professor Asa Islam Nayeem, general secretary of Bangladesh Historical Society, Dr Sufi Mustafijur Rahman, chairman of Archaeology Department of Jahangirnagar University spoke on the occasion, among others. The minister said Wari-Bateshwar was part of a civilisation that existed along the Brahmaputra basin 2500 years ago. He said the government has been financing the excavation work. He called upon the industrialists and rich men to assist in the excavation work. Discovery of different Temples of Mauryan period at the site reveals that the place was Mahajanapada, one of the earliest kingdom or state in Indian subcontinent. Wari-Bateshwar could be a part of Gangridae, which was described of rich place of tradein the estuary of the Ganges of Greekand Latin Literature and was also mention Ptolemy, Vergil, Strabo, Dendorus, Kartius archaeologists claim. Excavation at Wari- Bateshwar was first started on 2000.
