Prices of most vegetables and essentials in the capital’s kitchen markets came down a bit over the week ending yesterday, reports UNB. Visiting city’s Karwan Bazar, Nayabazar and Shantinagar Kitchen Markets, this correspondent found out that the prices of newly harvested potato, bean, tomato, bitter gourd, brinjal, radish and cabbage came down compared to that of the last week. However, the prices of cauliflower, sugar (white) , garlic (Chinese) and Miniket rice saw a price hike this week while the price of onion (local) still remain as high as it had been in the preceding week. Price of cauliflower has increased this week by at least Tk 5-10 per piece and was selling at Tk 25-35 per piece (medium size).
Halim, a vegetable seller at Karwan Bazar Kitchen Market, said supply of cauliflower has came down over the last four days for an unknown reason which caused the price hike. Price of garlic (Chinese) soared this week by Tk 20 per kg and was selling at Tk 130. Per kilogram prices of sugar (white) and Miniket rice have increased by Tk 4 and Tk 2 respectively and were selling at Tk 42 and Tk 44-46. Local onion was selling at Tk 70, keeping up with the price over the last couple of weeks.
Prices of most vegetables came down this week wile for some vegetables the price remained static. Price of newly harvested potato decreased by Tk 10-15 per kg and was selling at Tk 55-60 Bean was selling at Tk 25-30 per kg compared to last week’s price of Tk 35-40. Radish was selling at Tk 15-20 per kg whereas it was selling at Tk 25-30 previous week. Brinjal (round and red) was selling at Tk 40 per kg compared to Tk 60-70 per kg previous week. Bitter ground was selling at Tk 30-35 per kg whereas it was selling at Tk 40 per kg previous week. Price of Tomato (red) also decreased and was selling at Tk 60-70 (local) compared to last week’s Tk 80-100. Cabbage was selling at Tk 15-20 per piece compared to last week’s Tk 20-25. Price of pointed gourd, barbati (long bean) and carrot remained same compared to last week’s price and those were selling at Tk 30, Tk 50-60 and Tk 30-35 per kg respectively. Russell, a vegetables retailer in Nayabazar area, said that the prices of vegetables have been decreasing significantly as it is a brand new season of vegetables. “If there is no natural calamities like dense fog, winter season price is likely to decrease,” he added.
Monowara Begum, a housewife of Banani area, said, “Prices of vegetables are comparatively low this week than the previous one. I bought a cauliflower at Tk 40 last week which I bought at Tk 20-30 this week.” Meanwhile, grocery market prices remained static in the week Fine rice (Chinigura ) price decreased by Tk 2 per kg and was selling at Tk 82. Miniket was selling at Tk 2300-2350 per 50 kg sack while Atash Tk 1700, Najirshail 2650 and Paijam 1500. Fine flour (2 kg pack) was selling at Tk 80-84 while flour (2 kg pack) Tk 65, lentil (local) Tk 120-125 per kg , lentil (Indian) Tk 95-100 per kg, sugar (red) Tk 45 per kg, soybean oil (5 litre bottle) Tk 460-480, soybean oil (loose) Tk 82-85 per litre, palm oil Tk 60-65 per litre, mustard oil (1ltr bottle) Tk 180-230, mustard oil (loose) Tk 130-140 kg and salt (1 kg pack) Tk 25.
