An internal conflict dogging the Sreepur Awami League over upcoming municipality polls election peaked yesterday when someone locked the upazila party office in the town. Leaders and activists of AL upazila unit are now divided into two groups. Leaders and activists were seen gathering outside of the locked office yesterday morning. Sreepur upazila AL sources said there were at least four aspiring candidates who want to contest the municipal election with party nomination. They are present mayor of Sreepur municipality and president of Gazipur district Sramik League Anisur Rahman Anis, president of Sreepur municipality Awami League Sheikh Nazrul Islam, vice chairman of Sreepur upazila council and also secretary of Sreepur Upazila Al Mostafizur Rahman Bulbul and another AL leader Shakhawat Hossain Khan, But the central AL gave nomination to the present mayor Anis for the election. This has angered followers of Shekh Nazrul Islam.
While contacted, president of Sreepur municipality AL, who was an aspirant for the election, said he knew nothing about the matter. The mobile phone of president of Sreepur upazila AL advocate Shamul Alam Prodhan was found switched off. However, the selected mayoral candidate and also the present mayor of Sreepur municipality Anisur Rahman Anis said he found the AL office locked yesterday morning. “I went there, but I couldn’t enter the office.” However, the BNP selected Shahidul Islam Shahid as their candidate for this municipality election. Jatiya Party (Ershad) has chosen Nurul Islam, the president of Gazipur district JP, as their party candidate.
