Today is Dhanua Kamalpur free day. On this day in 1971, freedom fighters captured Dhanua Kamalpur, a frontier area in Bakshiganj upazila of Jamalpur district, from occupation Pakistan army following a bloody battle.  December 4 is observed as Dhanua Kamalpur Independence Day in a befitting manner every year. Dhanua Kamalpur was under sector 11, headed by Colonel Abu Taher was the commander of the sector. The sector was divided into eight sub sectors -- Mohendraganj, Mankarchar, Purakasia, Dhalu, Bagmara, Shibbari, Rangra and Moheshkhali.
Freedom fighters here fought 10 battles with the Pakistan army during the period from June 12 to November 28 in 1971. In the battles 194 freedom fighters embraced martyrdom, including Captain Salah Uddin Momtaj. During the battles 497 Pakistani troops were also killed. Besides, sector commander Colonel Abu Taher lost his one leg in a battle on November 14, 1971 at Dhanua Kamalpur.  The freedom fighters as part of the allied forces overpowered Pakistani army on the day in 1971 and captured Dhanua Kamalpur, the most important camp of Pakistani occupation army. Jamalpur district Muktijodha Command Council and Bakshiganj Upazila Muktijodha Command Council have jointly taken up programme to celebrate Dhanua Kamalpur free day in a befitting manner today.
Our Dinajpur correspondent reports: Phulbari, a border upazila of Dinajpur, was freed from Pakistani occupation on December 4 during the Lieberation War in 1971. The day will be celebrated in a befitting manner in the upazila on Friday holding different programmes.
On December 4, in 1971, valiant freedom fighters freed the upazila from Pakistani army by hoisting the flag in the upazila town after an overnight fierce fight with the Pakistani occupation forces. The Pakistani occupation forces retreated from Phulbari on that day. With the confirmation of victory, people poured into the upazila town and rejoiced the occasion chanting slogans ‘Joy Bangla’, led by hundred of freedom fighters of the upazila. On March 25 in 1971, the Pakistani forces launched a crackdown on the upazila with the help of its Bangladeshi collaborators and members of Albadr. After the declaration of independence by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on March 7, the freedom fighters formed resistance committee with an aim to protect Phulbari from the Pakistani forces. But the Bangladeshi collaborators provoked the Pakistani occupation army to launch arson attacks, looting and killing of innocent people at Phulbari. The massacre also forced many people to flee from the area.  Freedom Fighter Commander Monsur Ali Sarker hoisted the flag of independent Bangladesh at Phulbari C&B Bungalow in presence of Maj. PK Singh of Indian forces on December 4 in 1971.
