Central committees of both the Awami League and BNP have finalised mayoral candidates for six municipalities in Sirajganj, setting off a vigorous campaign for the election due on December 30. The municipalities have now taken a festive look with festoons and banners showing the pictures of the selected candidates and symbols of the parties that have been allowed for the first time to field their own men for mayoral posts. Boat, the AL party election symbol, and BNP’s ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ are now seen everywhere. The party nominated candidates are holding meetings and exchanging pleasantries with voters. The AL nominated mayoral candidates are Syed Abdur Rauf Mukta, also former President of Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Sirajganj, for Sirajganj Sadar municipality, renowned businessman and local AL leader Hazi Nizam Uddin for Kazipur municipality, Ashanur Bishwas, Chairman of Dowlatpur Union Parishad in Belkuchi and also wife of former minister for fisheries and livestock Abdul Latif Bishwas  for Belkuchi municipality, Nazrul Islam, General Secretary of Ullapara Poura AL for Ullapara municipality, Gazi Abdullah Pathan, Joint Secretary of Rayganj upazila AL for Rayganj municipality and ex-mayor Halimul Haque Meeroo for Shahzadpur municipality.
 Abu Mohammad Golam Kibria, General Secretary of Sirajganj District AL said the selected candidates of six municipalities have already received confirmation letters from the central committee.  On the other hand, BNP central committee has nominated again Sirajganj District BNP General Secretary Advocate Mokaddes Ali for Sirajganj municipality.
Among others, Nazrul Islam Khan, Present Mayor of Shahzadpur municipality and also Senior Vice-President of the upazila BNP has been nominated for Shahzadpur municipality, Abdur Razzaque Mandal, former General Secretary of Belkuchi upazila BNP for Belkuchi municipality, local BNP leader Nur Sayeed Sarker for Rayganj municipality, Belal Hossain, General Secretary of Ullapara upazila BNP, for Ullapara municipality and Masud Rayhan Mukul, Vice-President of Kazipur Poura BNP for Kazipur municipality.  Mazibur Rahman Lebu, Senior Vice President of Sirajganj District BNP said they have already asked all the party men and supporters to vote for their nominated candidates.
