Hanif’s 9th death anniversary observed with elaborate programmes

The 9th death anniversary of Mohammad Hanif, former president of Dhaka City Awami League and first elected mayor of Dhaka City, was observed with elaborate programmes yesterday, reports BSS. Marking his death anniversary, Dhaka City Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies, Dhaka South City Corporation, Mayor Mohammad Hanif Memorial Foundation, Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote and other organisations chalked out various programmes to observe the day befittingly.
The programmes of the day included visiting the grave of Mohammad Hanif, placing wreaths there, doa and milad mahfils, distribution of cooked food among destitute persons and discussion meeting. Mohammad Hanif, a political associate of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, suffered serious splinter injuries in the grenade attack made at Awami League’s anti-terrorism rally at Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21 in 2004. The popular Awami League leader ultimately succumbed to serious splinter injuries, particularly in his brain, on November 28 in 2008 after suffering for long. In the morning, leaders of Dhaka City AL led by its acting president MA Aziz placed wreath at the grave of the late leader.
Dhaka City AL joint general secretary Advocate Quamrul Islam, Dhaka South City Corporation mayor and Mohammad Hanif’s son Sayeed Khokon, Dhaka City AL organising secretary Shahe Alam Murad were present, among others.
Besides, Dhaka South City Corporation, Mayor Mohammad Hanif Foundation, Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote, Dhaka City South unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and other organisations placed wreaths at his grave paying deep homage to the late AL leader.
At that time, special prayers and munajat were offered seeking divine blessing for eternal peace of his departed soul. At about 11 in the morning, Dhaka South City Corporation organised a milad mahfil at Mohanagar Natyamancha at Gulistan Square, Dhaka City AL and Dhaka City South unit BCL also held a milad mahfil at its Bangabandhu Avenue office at 3 pm. Amra Muktijoddhar Santan, an organisation of the offspring of freedom fighters, organised a discussion at its central office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the afternoon marking the day. President of the organisation Md Humayun Kabir presided over the discussion, also addressed, among others, by general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam Nayan, presidium member Haji Md Emdadul Haque, vice-president Aminul Islam Ripon and organising secretary Nazim Uddin.
