With the resumption of cricketing activities in different countries, some quarters concerned with Bangladesh cricket want to back in business ending over two months of suspension due to coronavirus pandemic.
Cricketing activities started again in different countries, including Australia, recently with individual and small group training schedules after the enforced suspension triggered by the global outbreak of the deadly COVID-19 disease.
Officials of a number of cricket clubs and a regulatory body in Bangladesh are of the opinion that the BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) should also resume cricketing activities with a training schedule and then go for competitions.
Referring to Australia, who gave a schedule to start their cricketing calendar with a regional T20 competition, they said the BCB should also give its nod to resume Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League.
In the wake of coronavirus outbreak, the country’s most prestigious 50-over tournament was suspended on completion of the first round on March 17.
The BCB on March 26 suspended all types of cricketing activities for an indefinite period owing to the spread of the newly-emerged coronavirus that rocked the entire world.
The Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM), the apex body of the country’s clubs’ cricket, said they have no problem to resume the unfinished league games.
They, however, said everything depends on the government and the BCB as well because the league will not resume without their green signal.
CCDM Member Secretary Ali Hossain said resumption of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) entirely depends on the government.
“The government has reopened all the private and government offices on a limited scale ending the countrywide unofficial shutdown and general holidays. But it’s yet to give any directive on sporting events,” he said.
“There is no possibility of restarting the DPL until the government gives any decision on the issue. But, the sports ministry should come forward to settle the matter,” Hossain told The Independent over phone.
Club officials also want DPL resumption as soon as possible as there is a matter of promotion and demotion in the league.
“Before restarting the league, the CCDM will have to give the clubs at least seven days for practice. So it’ll take some time to restart the competition,” a club official said.
The ICC recently issued a guideline along with health instructions which a country should follow to resume their cricketing activities, he said.
The BCB, meanwhile, has reopened its activities at its headquarters on a limited scale in line with the government guidelines and health instructions.
