Shakib hogs headline again for wrong reason

Bangladesh ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan again became the headline for all wrong reasons. Hours after his consecutive second talismanic performance steered the Rangpur Riders win the consecutive second match in BPL, he was suspended for one match and fined Tk. 20,000 for two counts of BCB Code of Conduct breach during his team’s match against Sylhet Superstars on Thursday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
It was the third time inside last 22 months, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had to impose a penalty on him for his misbehavior on and off the field.
The latest penalty came yesterday when Shakib was reported by the on-field umpires Ranmore Martinesz and Tanvir Ahmed for violating Level 1 Articles 2.1.4 and 2.1.7 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel for using abusive language after dismissing Sylhet batsman Dilshan Munaweera in the fourth over of the Sylhet innings. Match Referee Selim Shahed imposed the fine after the player pleaded guilty to the offence.
Shakib received the suspension for breaching Level 2 Article 2.2.4 of the Code of Conduct for directing offensive and abusive language towards umpire Tanvir Ahmed in the 13th over of the Sylhet innings following the turning down of an appeal against Superstars captain Mushfiqur Rahim.
Shakib later bowled Nazmul Hossain Milon cleanly but mockingly stared to umpire Tanvir to know whether it was out.
As a penalty, he couldn’t take the field for Rangpur’s game against Comilla Victorians yesterday in which Pakistan Test captain Misbah-ul-Haque led
the side. As the player admitted the offences and accepted the sanction proposed by the Match Referee, therefore a formal hearing was not required.
In February 2014, he was suspended for three ODIs after making a lewd gesture on camera during the second one-dayer against Sri Lanka in a bilateral series.
About 10 overs after Shakib was dismissed during Bangladesh’s attempt of chasing 290 in Mirpur, the large screen at the Sher-e-Bangla ground showed replays of his dismissal, before the camera panned towards the Bangladesh dressing room. It was then that Shakib gestured towards his crotch and then the camera, a footage that was played live on television and across the stadium’s monitors. It was later suggested that the all-rounder perhaps did not take well to the criticism dished out by the commentators on-air when they discussed his dismissal.
He then missed the last ODI against Sri Lanka and subsequent two matches of Asia Cup, held in Bangladesh in March. But he didn’t learn from those mistakes.
