7th Nat’l Undergraduate Math Olympiad held at JU

The 7th National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad-2015 was held at the Mathematics department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Friday. Aimed at inspiring practice of mathematics for advancement of science as well as civilisation, the event was arranged for the honours level students of northern Dhaka. Vice chancellor of the university Prof Dr Farzana Islam inaugurated the Olympiad on the premises of the Mathematics department around 9am while dean of Physical and Mathematical Science Faculty Prof Nurul Alam, Secretary of Bangladesh Mathematics Society Dr M Shahidul Islam, Prof Dr Laek Sazzad Andallah, Prof Abdul Alim, Member Secretary and convener of the Olympiad Prof Abdur Rab and Prof Sayed Sabbir Ahmed were also present.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony VC Farzana Islam said, the world is moving forward with advancement of science which is closely related with mathmetics.
A total of 116 contestants from different universities in the northern Dhaka took part in the Olympiad held from 10.30am to 12pm.   
Later a discussion and question-answer session conducted by Prof Dr Laek Sazzad Andallah was also held at the Mathematics Gallery.
Addressing the session, Dr Andallah replied to the questions of the participants.
The competition like the Maths Olympiad would help explore latent talents of young generation and take Bangladesh further ahead, the hoped.     
Associate Prof Dr Osman Gani presented a paper on ‘Mathematics: Surrounding World’.
Pro-VC Prof Dr Abul Hossain distributed prizes and crests among the top ten winners while chairman of the JU Mathematics department Prof Dr Abdur Rab, also member secretary of the Olympiad Organizing Committee, was in the chair.
The winners are Md Tarikul Islam, Abdul Mohaimin Patwary and Md Billal Hossen from Uttara University, Kaushiq Islam from Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology, Pinku Debnath, Anika Tasnim and Sumaira Samiha from North South University, and Istiaque Ahmed, Shakibul Islam and Emran Islam from JU.
The regional level event is being held in the country's six regions-- Khulna, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Dhaka North and Dhaka South.
Bangladesh Mathematical Society in partnership with AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation organised the competition.
The grand finale will be held at AF Mujibur Rahman Gonit Bhaban of Dhaka University on December 11.
