A court here yesterday sentenced two member of banned Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to life term imprisonment for their involvement in serial bombing across the country on August 17, 2005. Another JMB man was jailed for ten years. The court also fined the trio Tk 5000 each, in default, to serve six months more rigorous imprisonment. The convicted were identified respectively as Mostafizur Rahaman, 38, of Kaligaonj upazila in Lalmonirhat, Monirujjaman, 45, of Kasura in Baliadangi upazila of Thakurgoan district and Sadiqul Islam, 45, of Debinagar in Nababganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district. According to the prosecution, on August 17, 2005, members of JMB militants set off bombs in various places, including court premises, in 63 districts simultaneously. Following the incident, Altaf Hosain, the then officer-in-charge of Lalmonirhat sadar police station, filed a case under explosive act.
After examining the records and witnesses District and Session Judge of Lalmonirhat Mia Mohammed Ali Akbar Aziz found them guilty and delivered the verdict.
