3 get life for raping girl

UNB, Thakurgaon

A tribunal on Thursday convicted three people and sentenced them to life term imprisonment in a case filed over gang-rape of a young girl in 2008.

The convicts are-Makim Uddin, Sumon and Malek of Ranishankoil upazila. Of them, Makim Uddin was tried in absentia.

The tribunal also fined them Tk one lakh each, in default, to suffer one year more rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, Makim Uddin along with others picked up the young girl, took her to the house of one Safina Begum at Jagtha village in Pirganj upazila and violated her in turns on September 24, 2008.

Victim's mother filed a case against five people on September 26, 2008.

Police submitted charge sheet against the three convicts and Safina Begum. Safina Begum died during the trial proceedings.

After examining the records and witnesses, Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Golam Faruk handed down the verdict.

 

Youth stabbed dead in Cumilla

UNB, Cumilla

A young man was stabbed to death and eight people were injured in an attack by a stalker at Raghurampur Araibari in Debidwar upazila on Thursday night.

The victim was identified as Abdul Awal, 30, son of Dhanu Mia of the village.

Zahirul Anwar, officer-in-charge of Debidwar Police Station, said Aslam, 22, son of Siddiqur Rahman. used to stalk a SSC examinee on her way to school.

On Thursday night, Abdus Sattar, father of the schoolgirl, arranged an arbitration over the issue at Raghurampur Araibari area around 9:30 pm in the presence of Aslam.

At one stage, Aslam along with his associates stabbed Awal, cousin of the girl, and some others with sharp weapons, leaving Awal dead on the spot and eight others injured.

The injured were taken to a local hospital.

On information, police rushed to the spot and arrested two people in this connection.

 

Teenage boy goes missing

UNB, Sylhet

A teenage boy feared drowned in Kushirara River in Osmaninagar upazila on Thursday.

The missing boy was identified as Maruf Mia, 17, son of Dulal Mia of Fatullah upazila in Narayanganj district.

Subinoy Biadya, sub-inspector of Osmaninagar Police Station, said Maruf along with 18 others went to a mosque in Osmaninagar upazila to join a programme of Tablig Jamaat.

On Thursday noon, Maruf along with two others went to the Kushiara River for taking bath.

At one stage, Maruf went missing while swimming in the river. On information, police, firefighting units rushed in and conducted a salvage operation.

 

Free health camp organised

A day-long free health camp for the poor was held at Gatia village under Bharatkhali union of Saghata upazila in the district on Thursday.

Gatia Miahbari Charitable Dispensary (GMCD) organised the health camp on the Mujib Year (Mujib Borsho) on the occasion of birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, sources said.

A number of physicians including specialists on medicine, heart, liver, kidney, diabetes, TB, eye, ENT, gyne, child and skin provided healthcare services to the patients.

While visiting the camp this correspondent found that poor people with chronically affected with diseases were receiving free treatment from the physicians.

In the morning, Professor Dr Quazi Deen Mohammad, Director of Neuroscience and Hospital, Dhaka formally inaugurated the health camp as the chief guest while deputy speaker of the Jatiya Sangshad and local lawmaker Advocate Fazley Rabbi Miah presided over the function.

A large number of people including physicians, political leaders, social workers and the journalists were present on the occasion.
