Campaign for municipality polls begins in Gangni

Although the Election Commission has not declare the poll schedule for Gangni Pourosova  in Meherpur district the aspirants have started election campaign. Banners and festoons with pictures of aspirants are seen in many places of the upazila. Gangni Union Parishad became pourosova at the end of 2001. The number of voters here is 16805, which include 8193 male and 8612 female. They will cast their vote through nine polling centers. The aspirants are sitting Mayor Ahmmd Ali, who is executive member of district Jubo League Convening Committee, director of Khadiza-Ashraf Foundation Ashraful Islam Vender, Awami League leader and eminent businessman Haji Mohsin Ali, Upazila Jubo League President Mosharraf Hossain, BNP Upazila Secretary Asaduzzaman Bablu and Jamaat-e-Islami Upazila Nayebe Ameer Dr. Rabioul Islam. Observers here say there are internal conflicts existing in two major parties -- Awami League and BNP -- at Gangni. There is possibility of more than one candidate taking part in the polls.  District Awami League Secretary M A Khaleque may support Jubo League leader Ashraful Islam Vender or Awami League leader Haji Mohsin Ali on the other hand valiant freedom fighter MP Mokbul Hossain is likely to back Upazila Jubo league President Mosharaf Hossain or present Mayor Ahmmed Ali.
BNP also split into two in question of selecting candidate for Gangni  mayoral post. Former BNP MP and BNP district President Amjad Hossain may give support to Gangni Upazla BNP Secretary Asaduzzaman Bablu and on the other hand influential BNP leader Zaved Masud Milton has not yet made it clear.
