584 low-income people get support of Tk 67.95 lakh

Some 584 low-income group people including 40 students were given financial support worth Taka 67.95 lakh aimed at improving their living and livelihood condition. Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) provided the support on behalf of its socio-economic fund belongs to the project titled ‘Livelihoods Improvement of Urban Poor Communities (LIUPC)’ at a function in the city bhaban conference hall here yesterday evening. City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton attended and addressed the distribution ceremony as chief guest with Chief Executive Officer Dr ABM Sharif Uddin in the chair.

RCC Secretary Abu Hayat Rahmatullah, Executive Engineer Nur Islam and Chief Community Development Officer Azizur Rahman were present. The meeting was told that around 45,000 marginal and low-income families are expected to become self-reliant through the anti-poverty project in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in the city in the next six years.

Member Secretary of the project Engineer Nur Islam said the LIUPC project is intended to achieve long-term sustainable growth by eradicating urban poverty and achieving Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The project has been designed to reach initially the served and underserved urban population in the city and to promote livelihoods and living conditions of 1.80 lakh poor people living in urban areas.
