Two male persons ‘involved in killing’

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has found the involvement of two persons in the killing of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.

Maasranga Television news editor Sagar Sarowar and his wife ATN Bangla senior reporter Meherun Runi were stabbed to death inside the bedroom of their apartment in Dhaka’s West Razabazar area on February 12, 2012.

Lt Colonel Sarwar-Bin Kashem, director (legal and media wing) of the RAB, told The Independent that they had submitted the progress report of the investigation in the Sagor-Runi murder case to the attorney general’s office through affidavit.

“There is a matter of the DNA test of the accused persons in connection with the case. In the DNA test, we got two male persons’ involvement in the killing incident. We have submitted the progress report, and the attorney general's office is likely to submit the report before the High Court tomorrow morning,” Kashem said.

Earlier, on November 11, the High Court (HC) had expressed disappointment over the slow progress of the investigation in the case.

After expressing grave concern over its tardy pace, the HC bench said the probe had not been completed, although eight years had passed since the gruesome killings.

The HC bench wanted to

know from the investigating officer (IO) of the case, Khondker Shafiqul Alam, who appeared before it on the day as per its earlier directive, whether the case would remain on the list of sensational cases.

The bench, comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman, made this remark while hearing a petition filed by an accused, Tanvir Rahman, who is now on bail.

During the day’s proceedings, the IO of the case, who is an additional superintendent of the RAB, submitted the case docket before the HC bench and said that the investigation was on.

Relevant samples of the accused and the deceased had been sent to the laboratory of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the US for DNA tests, he added. The HC bench later wanted to know from him whether the future of the investigation into the case was dependant on the DNA test results.

The IO replied: “After getting the test results from the US, we will be able to move forward with the investigation.” Earlier, on October 20 last year, the HC, in response to a petition filed by Tanvir, had summoned the IO to appear before it with the Sagar-Runi murder case dockets to know the progress of the investigation.

The HC bench had also issued a rule asking the government to explain in two weeks why the proceedings of the case against Tanvir should not be quashed.

Tanvir, an official of an English medium school in Dhaka, filed the petition, seeking the scrapping of trial proceedings against him in the case.

Sagar Sarowar and his wife Meherun Runi were stabbed to death inside the bedroom of their apartment in Dhaka’s West Razabazar area on February 12, 2012.

Later, eight suspects were arrested in connection with the incident. Different courts have expressed dissatisfaction over the probe on several occasions. But the investigation into the case is yet to be completed.
