Purge in BCB standing committees likely

In this file photo, Chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu (L) is seen with head coach Russell Domingo.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is soon going to bring about changes in some of the standing committees in view of the recent dismal performance of the Bangladesh cricket team.  Speculation is rife that the BCB’s Cricket Operations Committee might be changed along with some other committees.

Cricket Operations looks after the well-being of the national team, its tour schedule, and other things. The recent poor performance of the national team has raised questions about its efficiency.

Since the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in the UK, where the team managed to win only three matches, Bangladesh are in the doldrums. After the tournament, they have lost to Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan.

Winning against Zimbabwe in a tri-series and T20I against India has been their only success so far.

The national team was whitewashed by Pakistan in the T20I series and lost the Rawalpindi Test by an innings, making the BCB sit up and take notice of the rot.

Recently, BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon held a closed-door meeting with head coach Russell Domingo and Minhajul Abedin Nannu to discuss the national team’s recent disappointing show. He discussed future plans with the head coach and the chief selector.

Papon is mulling over introducing changes in the national team, team management, and the standing committees.

The Games Development Committee handles the responsibilities of all age-group teams. Khamled Mahmud Sujon is in charge of this committee. This body played a big role in the Bangladesh Under-19 team’s world cup triumph.

The Bangladesh Under-19 team played more than 30 youth ODI matches since the 2018 Youth World Cup. They toured England, New Zealand, India, and Sri Lanka. They played many matches during those tours, which prepared them to show their potential in the biggest stage and resulted in their first-ever world cup win.

If the Games Development Committee can inspire the youth team to scale the heights, why the Cricket Operations Committee has failed to succeed with their tested and established national team? This question is now being asked at the high echelons of Bangladesh cricket.

Former captain Akram Khan might be removed from the BCB Cricket Operations Committee’s chairmanship and replaced by the country’s first-ever Test captain Naimur Rahman Durjoy.

Currently, Durjoy is in charge of the BCB’s High Performance (HP) Unit.

BCB sources say the reshuffle will not merely be in Cricket Operations, but also in Cricket Facilities.

Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan was in charge of the Facilities Committee. He is currently in custody. So, the board is considering putting a new man in charge. The names of Syed Ashfiqul Islam Titu and Shafiul Islam Chowdhury Nadel are doing the rounds as possible candidates in this regard.

There is no confirmation whether the reshuffle of the committees would take place before the forthcoming home series against Zimbabwe.  But the changes are most likely to be made before the Tigers' tour of Pakistan in the third phase.
