Man gets life term for violating minor girl

A Barishal court yesterday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for violating a 10-year old girl of Mehendiganj upazila after abduction. He was identified as Shahjahan Rari.
The accused was also fined Tk one lakh or to suffer three years more imprisonment, in default.
Abu Shamim Azad, judge of ‘Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman (Women and Children Repression Prevention) Tribunal’ Barishal, handed down the verdict in presence of the accused after examining six out of ten witnesses.
Advocate Faizul Huq Fayez, special prosecutor of the tribunal, acknowledging the fact, said Shahjahan abducted and violated a 10-year old girl of Yearbeg village under Mehendiganj upazila of the district when she went to collect clothes on March 3, 2010 afternoon.
The victim narrated the story to family members after returning home. Mother of the victim lodged a rape case against Shahjahan on March 7, 2010 with the tribunal.
After investigation Sub-Inspector Abdul Malek Haoladar submitted charge sheet against the accused on May 15, 2010.
Four businesses fined

National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate in two separate drives in the city and Agoiljhara upazila fined four business enterprises for violating consumer rights.
During the drive at Barishal city, Khandakar Anwar Hossain, deputy director of the of the divisional office of the directorate, led the mobile court and fined Abdul Jalil Goldar, owner of Zinia oil mill Tk 5,000 for marketing product without production and expiry dates.
The court also fined Mezbahuddin Azad, owner of Bangladesh Medicine Stores of the city, Tk 4,000 for storing date expired medicine.
One other hand Fatima Akhter Tonny, Agailjhara upazila assistant commissioner for land conducted a drive at Baropaikka of Ratnapur Union and fined Zakir Hossain Talukdar, owner of Mayer Doa Poultry Feed Tk10,000 for polluting environment by dumping poultry feed and garbage. The mobile court also fined Dipangkar Bepari, owner of Ankhi Dental Care Tk 10,000 for operating business using fake degree and designation.
AL-backed panel gets president, GS of Ctg Bar polls

Awami League-backed Chattogram Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad candidates Sayed Muktar Ahmed and Abul Hossain Mohammad Ziauddin have been elected President and General Secretary (GS) respectively in Chattogram District Bar Association (CDBA) election.
Chief election commissioner Advocate Subash Chandra Lala on Monday night declared the polls results of CDBA.
Of the total 19 posts, Pro-AL backed Chattogram Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad lawyer panel secured seven posts including president and general secretary while BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Parishad candidate lawyer panel got rest 12 posts.
A total of 3,700 lawyers out of 4,567 cast their votes.
Ctg book fair inaugurated

Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Monday said the new generation should be encouraged to develop their habit of reading creative books as a healthy generation can only develop a nation.
“Our aim is to build a developed nation by 2041 . . . For this, we need a healthy generation who can lead the nation,” he said, addressing the inaugural function of Amar Ekushey Book Fair at MA Aziz Stadium in the port city.
The minister said Bangabandhu’s daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has envisioned to build the nation equipping it with economic prosperity, merit and collective intelligence by 2041.
