A reporting team of private television channel NEWS24 came under attack allegedly by dozens of workers of a market at Nayabazar in the capital at around 2:00 pm yesterday. The workers allegedly beat up a reporter of named Fakhrul Islam and cameraperson Sheikh Jalal while the duo was waiting on the spot to collect news. The attackers also snatched away their camera, backpacks and vandalised their vehicle, said one of the victims Fakhrul Islam.
Faruq Hossain, the chief reporter of NEWS24, said a team of journalists from his television channel were waiting outside a market to cover a raid to be conducted by Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate
(CIID) at Noyabazar area of Old Dhaka.
“CIID was conducting the raid to stop illegal trade of papers imported under bonded warehouse facilities,” said Faruq. Dozens of workers of the market assaulted the journalists and snatched away their camera and backpacks, Faruq added.
The injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Bangshal police station, Md Shahin Fakir, said police were trying to detain the culprits and that a case was being lodged as per the complaints of the victims.
