79 arrested in Ctg
CHITTAGONG: District police in an overnight drive on Wednesday arrested 79 people from different places of the district on charges of their alleged involvement in subversive activities, drug peddling, and robbery.
During the drive police seized 165 contraband yaba tablets.
The district police conducted a special drive to nab the criminals in Satkanina, Loaghara, Sitakunda, Chandanish, Banskhali, Boalkhali, Hathazari, Fatickchhari areas on Wednesday night and continued to till early yesterday.
“Police arrested 79 people, including two Jamaat-Shibir activists, for their alleged involvement with subversive activities during countrywide blockade enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance and warranted accused from different parts of the district,” said Md Naimul Hasan, additional superintend of police (Special Branch), Chittagong district.
“The drive will be continued,” added Naimul.
Abducted man rescued
SYLHET: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive rescued a man who had been abducted from Mymensingh and arrested five alleged abductors from Puraton Dhamri Bazar area in Jaintapur upazila on Wednesday.
The rescued was identified as Mohammad Yunus Torofdar, 56, son of Kashem Torofdar, a resident of Fulbaria upazila of Mymensingh district.
The arrestees were Donai Mian, 35, Mohammad Robi Hossain, 32, Mohammad Abdul Majid Pappu, 24, Subed Ahmmed, 23, and Mohammad Jubayer Ahmmed, 24.
Being tipped off a team of Rab-9 conducted a drive in the area at noon and rescued the man from the house of Donai Miah in the area. Later police arrested the five suspected abductors.
Man held with 696g gold
Customs officials arrested a man along with six gold bars weighing 696 grams from Shahjalal International Airport in the capital yesterday morning.
The arrestee was identified as Mohammad Idris, 39, hailing from Chittagong. Sohel Rahman, joint commissioner of Dhaka Customs House, said Idris came here from Maskat by a flight of G9-517 around 08:35am.
The officials challenged him when he was coming out of the airport through the green channel and recovered six gold bars weighing 696 grams from hard plastic layer of his travel bag. The market value of the gold was around Tk34 lakh.
