6 killed, 10 hurt in road crashes

At least six persons lost lives in separate road accidents in Barishal, Barguna and Kushtia districts yesterday. In Barguna, three of a family died in a road crash that left 10 others injured. The accident took place when a bus veered off the main road and fell into a ditch near A K School at Amtoli in the district at 11am yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Nupur (40), her son Md. Hasib (10) and Hasib’s maternal cousin Lamia (14). Eye-witnesses said a bus named ‘Mayer Doa’ from Patuakhali was heading towards Kuakata in the morning when the driver of the vehicle lost control of the wheels. The bus fell in to a ditch killing three people on the spot. The injured were rushed to upazilla health complex. Officer in charge (OC) of Amtoli police station Md Abul Basar said the bus was seized following the incident and the bodies were sent to Barguna General Hospital for autopsy.

Meanwhile, a child was killed in a road crash in Barishal yesterday. The child was identified as Rokan (5), son of a navy officer, Rafikul Islam. Barishal Airport police station OC Zahid Bin Alam said the child was hit by a locally-made three-wheeler at Sher-e-Bangla Road of the city yesterday morning.

Following the crash, agitated people blocked the road and demanded punishment of the driver of the three-wheeler.

Police rushed to the spot to disperse the agitated locals and seized the vehicle.  UNB adds: an elderly bystander was killed in a road accident on the Kushtia-Rajbari highway yesterday.

Witnesses said Yusuf Ali Sheikh (80), son of late Abu Sheikh of village Poschim Lahinipara of Kumarkhali upazila, died when a cow-laden 'nosimon' hit him while the man was standing in front of a tea stall at Dobir Molla Gate area on the highway at 11am.

The 'nosimon' coming from Kumarkhali dashed Yusuf after losing control – killing him on the spot.

Kumarkhali police station OC Jahangir Alam said police recovered the body from the spot.

Meanwhile, a worker named Rajib Mollick, 23, died after being dashed by a bus while crossing road in Mirpur Talbaria area on Kushtia-Ishwardi highway at 1:00pm in the afternoon.
