Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) -7 destroyed some poppy fields in a remote hilly area in Ruma upazila of Bandarban yesterday.
Poppies were being cultivated across seven acres of land deep inside the forest near Keokradong mountain, Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, assistant director of RAB’s legal and media wing said.
No arrest have been made over the cultivation of poppy so far. Law enforcers have launched a search for the owner of the farm and a case will be soon filed in this regard, he added.
Poppy plants are key ingredients in the production of opium, which is used to make heroin and other synthetic opioids, in high demand in the illegal drug market.
RAB also seized around 60kg of poppy nectar from the four fields. Later, the elite police unit destroyed the fields and the nectar.
