The Dhaka University (DU) disciplinary council has recommended expulsion of 67 students for life and 13 temporarily on various charges. Of them, 63 have been recommended to be expelled for committing admission forgery and four for drug abuse and arms possession. Also, the university suspended 13 more students temporarily over mugging and two others for beating up journalists. The suspended had been show-caused and asked to clarify their position within seven working days.
The decision was taken at the council's meeting yesterday, with DU vice-chancellor (VC) Prof. Md Akhtaruzzaman in the chair. DU proctor Prof. AKM Golam Rabbani, also member secretary of the committee, confirmed the matter. Prof Rabbani said: “Allegation of question leak was brought against 87 students. Of them, 63 have been recommended for expulsion. The university syndicate will now take the final decision. They also helped others adopt illegal means to get admitted to the university and were involved in question leak and admission forgery. We won’t spare the frauds. It’s a matter of the university’s reputation. Some days back, four residents of the Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall were expelled.”
When asked, the proctor said: “According to Dhaka University rules, permanently expelled students have no chance to appeal against the decision, but the temporarily expelled can. The 13 temporarily expelled students had been asked to reply to the show-cause within seven working days.”
The students got themselves admitted to the university by resorting to fraudulent means in the academic sessions 2012–13 to 2017–18. “The CID and the university authorities jointly investigated the SM Hall incident in which the DUCSU VP Nurul Haque Nur and his associates were allegedly beaten up,” said the proctor.
Moreover, 31 students of different terms were charged with cheating in internal exams of the university.
On June 23 last year, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) submitted two charge-sheets in court against 87 students among 125.
“The CID, Channel24 and DU authorities jointly investigated the matter and identified the 125 students,” the proctor said.
On August 6, the Dhaka University authorities suspended 69 students on the charge of cheating in admission tests. Later, the university authorities issued a show-cause notice, asking them to explain their positions over the allegations brought against them within seven days.
The explanations provided by the accused did not satisfy the authorities and, finally, they recommended the expulsion of 63 students. Earlier, nine were expelled temporarily and 15 for life, Golam Rabbani added. On October 23, the DU authorities suspended four students for drug abuse and possession of arms and also served them show-cause notice, asking them to explain why they should not be expelled. All are students of the Hazi Mohammad Mohsin residential hall.
