Dhuruba Sunish of India and Lian Tran of The Netherlands clinched the coveted boys’ and girls’ singles titles respectively in the 29th Bangladesh ITF Junior Tennis Championship at Zafar Imam Tennis Complex in Rajshahi yesterday.
Sunish defeated his compatriot Ishaque Iqbal 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 in the final. On the other hand Lian snatched a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 win over Lalita Devarakonda in the girls’ singles final. Lian also won the singles title in the first-leg last week in Dhaka where she beat her sister Demi Tran
Ishaque Iqbal pairing with Parikhat Somani gave India another title in the boys’ doubles event. Iqbal and Somani defeated Dhuruba Sunish of India and Viswal Chagani of Hong Kong 6-3, 6-1 in the final.
The Bangladesh Tennis Federation President and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam distributed prizes as chief guest.
Neither in the Dhaka-leg nor in the Rajshahi-leg Bangladesh players could exhibit any laudable performance in this ITF Group-V tournament. Barring one pair in boys’ doubles in Dhaka none could reach the quarterfinal stage.
