The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has demolished the boundary wall of a jute mill and seven other illegal structures, including two one-storey buildings that had been illegally constructed on the banks of the Shitalakhya in Narayanganj.  Besides, two persons were detained while constructing a Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) ghat illegally near the Chittaranjan ghat areas.  

The eviction drive yesterday followed a High Court (HC) order to free the riverbanks of encroachment. The drive started on December 29.  “We conducted the drive at Amirabad’s Baktarkandi area under Bandar police station for the fourth consecutive day. We have recovered 0.5 acres of river land, including 700 square feet of the riverbank that was grabbed by R Amin Jute Mill. We have demolished the mill’s boundary wall, which was constructed illegally on the riverbank,” Masud Kamal, joint director of Narayanganj River Port, told this correspondent.

He said they demolished a total of two one-storied buildings, five tin-shed houses, and a boundary wall. Moreover, Tk. 66,000 was realised through the auction of the demolished materials, he added.
