Even though the players in Bangladesh are good and talented, Sylhet Thunder head coach Herschelle Gibbs said they have enough lacking in their cricket what are the main barriers of their team and individual cricket development.
Gibbs also said he did not see any local player in BPL, even in his Thunder ranks to perform his or their cricket game after being understood and read the match situation or the pressure situation of the match properly.
Citing Shakib Al Hasan’s name, former South African veteran batsman said he has seen the traits of every quality in this ace Bangladesh player who plays his games according to the demand of the match whether it is in the World Cup or the bilateral series at home and away.
“What you said ‘tough’ you know talent what it is. It’s never nice situation been. You know we’d never been in that situation. Ultimately you look at yourself that you’re representing the franchisee, representing a brand, representing the league. So, pride in performance, you know, that never goes at your window. You know it’s an opportunity for the next four games someone to be a hero. Talent is all around. Of course, we can’t make plans anymore but that’s new challenges. I set to them last night that a new year. They got all aspects of the game mentally, technically and physically. Teams are getting to look at all they improve as a cricketer both bat and ball. So, that’s things are first for me,” said Herschelle Gibbs, who was away from media from the beginning of his advent in Bangladesh as head coach for Sylhet Thunder in BPL.
“And, obviously [it’s] nice to be part definitely because he sees the different skills, the skills on the display. You see their abilities to read the situation. So, all the things nice are able to pick up. We know obviously are in a situation. [There were] a lot of a times reading the situation on the field. In the way we fall we’re ensured the basics of both in little bit of pressure and partnerships with bat and ball. Those are the things, of course, to look at. How do you understand in reading of the game? Your guys are all good, talented players with bat and ball. So, that from me is way may be lacking in this particular squad of players, just understanding the game, making better decisions-the things I get. And that’s why, the guys are the bother--- not only us. That I showed it a little bit,” Gibbs told media at the Sylhet District Stadium after Thunder’s pre-match day practice session yesterday.
The head coach said that there is a big difference in language because they can’t understand the language of overseas coaches and players from whom they will learn and prepare themselves as the future star or asset of Bangladesh.
Sylhet stands on the bank of the early exit from the BPL. When he was asked about the question, Gibbs said there were lackings in the formation of the squad that was not enough good team for the play-off or the BPL final.
“Look, I mean unfortunately, I wasn’t dropped. I basically handled the squad. If you look our squad has a couple of left-hand batsmen, some more left arm off-spinners. You know that’s the squad I have given. You know, as a coach I need look at I put on pressure from opposition. When we play, opposition would see we’ve one left-arm batsman. So, it’s easier for their bowlers to put pressure on our batsmen as we’ve all are right hand batsmen. I never see such a squad player without one left-handed batsman,” he opined. “That’s like the stance should have at least two in top six. So, did you put pressure from opposition bowlers? I don’t have that. So, it’s been difficult. So, guys’ mentality doesn’t read the situation. We don’t have any partnership on the front. Then it’s difficult to put more pressure in the second half of the batting because we have no existence other variety in the team,” he said.
“If we got left arm spinners and right arm spinners, unfortunately, the balls haven’t got turning. Wickets have been dried. That makes the difference. Left-arm spinner and right arm –spinner. If you’re right your pace in the line and length, you’ll be successful. You see a real quality of spinners whose bowls don’t make turner. That’s the activity of skills at the end of the day. The way we set to them that’s needed to improve.”
“You know a lot of the spinners gone because of the wickets as wickets are very good. That’s why, you know, someone like Rashid Khan. He does well in wickets that are downturn. You know that’s nice to be able to say that because you didn’t see the real quality of spinners. Not win a turns. Don’t know to turning. But in the same thing I don’t have right hand batsman. So, I need them to actually migrants otherwise no pressure on anybody. So, it’s unfortunate. But that’s not the squad that our dull place. But hopefully you know after this next couple of games, you know, certain things about the way we need to improve skill-level wise just understanding of being a situation better on the field. That’s why the guys are over there. I just done apply the pressure and absorb the pressure we need to be,” he concluded.
