Entire country to come under railway network, says PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said the government has taken steps to bring the entire country under railway network for development of its communications system, reports UNB. “We want to carry goods through railways alongside roads and waterways,” she said when visiting Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) President Jin Liqun met her at her official residence Ganabhaban. After the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters. He said the Prime Minister mentioned that the government has taken initiatives for river dredging maintaining their normal flow and reclaim lands with that. Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh can export more food grains, fish and vegetables if the country’s infrastructure facilities could be developed further. Highlighting Bangladesh’s progress in socioeconomic field, she said people’s demand pattern has changed here due to the country’s stunning development. “Once people used to demand food, but now they demand electricity.” She said her government wants to involve rural people in more economic activities like agro-processing, poultry and dairy industries to bring dynamism in the rural economy. Talking about the four-nation BBIN cooperation involving Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal, Sheikh Hasina said that it was her initiative which is now being implemented.
