Jatiya Party (JP) nominated Brigadier General (retd) Kamrul Islam as mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and party’s presidium member Haji Saifuddin Ahmed Milon for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) elections. Party’s Secretary General Moshiur Rahman Ranga announced names of the candidates at a meeting at party’s Banani office in the capital yesterday.
Former army officer Kamrul joined the Jatiya Party last week. And Saifuddin Milon was a presidium member on the last committee of the party.
Ranga said that Kamrul Islam will contest for the Dhaka north mayoral post while Milon for Dhaka South from the Jatiya Party. He urged all the party men to work for them.
Ranga also said, “Milon was confused to some extent at the beginning. We said later that you are a good fit for this election. We will use all the power behind him.”
Earlier, the Awami League picked Atiqul Islam and Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapos for the mayoral polls in the two city corporations.
The BNP, meanwhile, selected Tabith Awal and Ishraque Hossain to contest the polls.
On Dec 22, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the polls fixing Jan 30 for voting. The aspirants have until December 31 to submit their nomination papers. The nominations will be verified on Jan 2 while the deadline for withdrawing from the race ends on Jan 9.
