Election fever grips people

At least nine aspiring candidates, including present and former mayors and about one hundred councilors from Awami league, BNP and PCJSS, have started people-to-people contact to drum up support for the municipal polls. Incumbent Mayor in Bandarban municipality M Jabed Raza said he will be contesting the election from BNP to retain the post. Muhammad Islam Company and Nasir Uddin, district level BNP leaders, said they will seek party nomination to run for the mayoral post. General secretary of district unit Awami League Muhammad Islam Baby said his party is prepared to contest in the municipal election in Bandarban. He said only one candidate will be selected and get support from the party for posts of mayor and councilor at word level. Baby said he himself is a candidate for mayoral post. From the AL, the other mayoral aspirants are Muzammel Haq Bahadur, Amol Kanti Das and Samsul Islam. Former mayor and BCL leader Mizanur Rahman Biplab as an independent and from PCJSS supported candidate Joly Mong Marma will also contest the election for mayoral post. Major problems facing the Bandarban municipality are bad shape of roads, water logging in the town and crisis of pure drinking water. Mayor M Jabed Raza, however, claimed that he had implemented several development projects in all 9 words to ensure civic amenities. District election office sources said they have take preparation for holding the municipal election.
