Students demand justice for Sumona

Students of different schools and colleges yesterday staged demonstrations and blocked Chaurasta intersection area for two hours in the town demanding justice for their one of their fellows Sumona Haque who was murdered allegedly after rape.

Several hundred students gathered at Boromath in the town at 11am and brought out a protest procession that ended at Chaurasta intersection.

They staged demonstrations at Chaurasta intersection for two hours demanding capital punishment of the killer. Later, Deputy Commissioner D KM Kamruzzaman Selim expressed solidarity with the students and assured that the criminal will be brought to book as soon as possible.

Sumona, 9, a third-grader of Thakurgaon High School and daughter of Md Jwel of Goalpara area, went missing after she went to her neighbour Yasin Habib's house to play on December 15.

Four days later, police recovered her body which was buried in a room of the house.

Police detained the 15-year-old son of Yasin who later confessed to killing the minor girl after rape, said Sub-Inspector Ahmed Ullah of Sadar Police Station.
