Remembering legend Azam Khan
Known as the ‘Pop Guru’ of Bangladesh, Azam Khan ((28 February 1950 - 5 June 2011), the legendary Bangladeshi singer, certainly created a major impact as far as the music scene in Bangladesh is concerned. Considered to be one of the main pioneers of popular Bangladesh pop music, Azam Khan was also a freedom fighter who took part and fought for the freedom of Bangladesh in 1971. Following the Liberation War, he made his presence felt in the music scenario with his band Uccharon. Bangladesh Television broadcasted his first concert in 1972.
Memorable songs such as ‘Ore Saleka, Ore Maleka’, ‘Jibone Kichhu Pabona Re’, ‘Ami Jare Chaire’, ‘Ashi Ashi Bole Tumi’, ‘Obhimani’, ‘Rail liner bostite’, ‘Hei Allah Hei Allah Re’, ‘Alal O Dulal’ are some of the tracks that captivated the music lovers of the country and remain popular to this day. Azam Khan is considered as the individual who introduced the pop genre to Bangladeshis and together with pop music contemporaries Fakir Alamgir, Ferdous Wahid, Firoz Shai, Najma Zaman, and Pilu Momtaz, created that impact that would forever leave a legacy.
Azam Khan, the legendary singer, the Pop Guru, left behind a legacy and even though he is no longer here with us, his exuberance, his will and determination and the sheer passion with which he captured the hearts and minds of Bangladesh music fans with his performances and his songs will remain forever.
Today marks his fourth death anniversary and for that several private satellite television channels will show several programmes. Boishakhi TV will telecast a special live programme titled ‘Samay Katuk Gaane Gaane’ tonight at 11 pm. Anchored by Srabonno Tawhida, singer Piyal and Mehrab among others will sing the popular numbers of Azam Khan.
A special report on Azam Khan will also be shown in the programme where his brother lyricist Alam Khan along with singer Ferdous Wahid, Fakir Alamgir, Ayub Bachchu, Haider Hossain and former captain of Bangladesh cricket team Muhammad Ashraful can be seen talking about the legendary singer. l
